Romans, Chapters 12-14

What makes us Family? Jesus Christ

… because of His mercy and salvation

We offer our lives to Him so He can restore us
We surrender all!

What does a redeemed member of the Family look like?

The Lord is the “Great Mechanic” of our life, so what does the “Check Engine Light”  of our life look like? Ask, “What needs to happen here, what needs to be aligned in my life and my heart?”

Examine your heart as you read these verses…

Romans 12:9 “Love must be sincere, hate what is evil, cling to what is good.”
1 Corinthians Ch. 12-14  Love is explained: gifts absent from love are a clanging symbol or a resounding gong.  Also Galations 5:22-23 – Fruit of the Spirit.
SINCERE LOVE (without hypocrisy, authentic, no acting; no putting on false love or acting like you are better than you are; take off the mask, stop hiding the cracks; make a commitment to one another in all that you are.)
Learn how to “Love one another, hate what is evil and cling to what is good.” HATE EVIL! Not people. Evil causes sin.
Have a drive towards GOODNESS & GODLINESS

  • This drive is similar to the way the world clings to strong worldly desires.
  • Family love, is COMMITTED love.  LOVE is about Commitment
  • Brotherly love is similar. God has sovereignly  put us together.

Rom 12:10  Honor one another above yourself.
  vs. 11:  Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your Spiritual zeal in serving the Lord.
Don’t “run out of gas”; we need the fuel of the HOLY SPIRIT to keep the FIRE of the SPIRIT stay active in your life.
 vs. 12: Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
A walk of FAITH requires FAITH! Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
vs. 13:  Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
Open up your heart and  home to others. Look for ways to fulfill needs.
If it’s been awhile that we have been “put out” to help someone, maybe my check-engine light is on.
vs. 14:  Bless those who persecute you. Bless and do not curse.
Get on your knees and ask the Lord to bless those who persecute you.
vs. 15: Rejoice to those who rejoice. Mourn with those who mourn.
Live in harmony with one another
Be in harmony with each other, watch the CONDUCTOR of your life and follow HIM.
vs. 16: Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low
                 position; do not be conceited.
Don’t seek to hang out with the “cool kids.”  Don’t choose to hang out with only the popular people.  Treat others as family regardless of status.
  vs. 17-18: Do not repay anyone evil for evil, be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone, if it is possible as far as it depends on you live at peace with everyone.
We are called to live at peace to extend wholeness to everyone. Don’t be closed off to reconciliation with all. Truth is greater than our “feelings”
Be open to reconcile even with those who don’t want it. Be gracious.
vs. 19-20: Don’t take revenge; my dear friends but leave room for God’s wrath…on the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him, if he is thirsty give him something to drink…heap burning coals on his head.
What this means is don’t take revenge, don’t judge and condemn; We are called to love, the “burning coals” are conviction someone gets as we do good to them. My job is to pray, bless and love and let God do the rest. God is the Righteous Judge.
vs. 21: Don’t be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

When we follow Jesus we live a new life of adoption into a family and become what He’s called us to be.
