The Light of Life

November 1, 2017·Mike Gentry

John 1:1-5
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

I love reading this passage of scripture. It’s so short, simple, and to the point, but there is so much in this text that we can unpack and dive deep into. This passage shows us that Jesus, our Savior, was never just a man that walked on the earth and died on a cross, but He was and is and is to come! Jesus was in the beginning, He has always been. We see that He was with God as the second part in the Trinity. We can also see that there is no separation between God and Him.

We can see from this, that God Himself left His throne in heaven and came to earth to spend time with us, his most precious creation! Of all the many things God created, He chose to come down to earth and spend His valuable time with us. When Jesus walked on this earth, He surrounded Himself with finite, sinful beings that wanted nothing more than to sin and live a filthy life, from the very beginning. Yet, He still came to our rescue. He came that we “may have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10b)!

He is the light that shines through the darkness and sets us free from sin and captivity. We all have come into a place of darkness in our lives at one point or another. Maybe you’re even in a place of darkness right now. What you need to understand is that if you are in Jesus, there is no place for darkness to hide. Let the light of Jesus, the light that takes away the sin of the world, fill you so full of Himself that your darkness will not be able to withstand it!

When you walk into a room and turn on the light, the room is immediately filled with light. How much more will the light of Jesus pierce through the darkness in your life? It has to flee! If you’re struggling with fear, doubt, worry, guilt, shame, unforgiveness, or any of a myriad of uncertainties; I encourage you to surrender it to the only One that can truly set us free.
