‘Tis the Season to Let Your Light Shine

December 4, 2019·Carmen Quevedo

Lights are up all over town! While many Christmas traditions of yesterday have found themselves getting choked out – some for good reason, like the hardly missed fruitcake – one tradition seemingly grows each year without end… lighting up the town! We are fascinated with Christmas lights. On our rooftops, in our living rooms, around our necks, every gathering place, business and celebration find a way to light up the night. Why do we love lights so much?

I contend, it’s because light brings warmth, fullness, togetherness and, by default, it casts out darkness, cold and empty places in our lives. 1 John 1:5-7 tells us about the one true Light of the World:

“This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in Him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin.”

While everyone around us is mesmerized with lights this Christmas, we have this beautiful opportunity to be people who live in the light of Jesus Christ – acting like Him, reflecting His love, warmth and answer to life’s darkest moments. As you find yourself drawn to the beauty of the lights of the season, will you join me in being reminded to be the light of Jesus to everyone we meet? It’s not about trying harder or speaking louder, it’s about walking in fellowship with our God, living in His light and shining brightly everywhere we go. Shine brightly this Christmas!
