True North

August 28, 2019·Kristin Gentry

Your eternal word, O Lord, stands firm in heaven. Your faithfulness extends to every generation, as enduring as the earth You created. Your regulations remain true to this day, for everything serves Your plans. If Your instructions hadn’t sustained me with joy, I would have died in my misery.”
— Psalm 119:90-92

Doesn’t it seem like every direction we turn these days, some new truth is being presented? And have you noticed that sometimes, even a year later, a new scientific study has proven that the truth that was previously presented is not only misleading, but totally false! That’s a recipe for confusion and, if there is anything that describes our current age, it’s just that — complete and total confusion.

I’m currently reading a book that discusses this very matter and how strange it is that even though we can argue truths back and forth until the cows come home, there are some things that everyone agrees on — it totally blows my mind. Time, for example — nobody on Earth questions the time of day. If it’s 1pm here in California, it’s 4pm in Michigan, and 12:30am in Iran. Another is direction. True North remains constant and determines the rest of the latitude and longitude lines that give us a solid foundation about our geographical location anywhere around the globe.

God’s Word is True North. It does not change throughout the generations. It is eternal and stands firm. It is the source in which we can know God’s true character and find His path for our lives. Without His instruction and direction, where would we be? We would be as lost as a ship at sea that has lost its sense of True North, tossed and turned by every violent wave and pulled in whichever direction the current happens to be going.

Perhaps, the illustration I just gave describes how you might feel right now. You feel lost, misdirected, confused, and perhaps a little beat up. I encourage you to pause, pray, and seek God’s Truth in His Word today.

Heavenly Father, thank you for being ever present in our lives and thank you for equipping us in this world with the Sword of Your Spirit. Continue to guide and direct each of us. Give us Your wisdom, Lord. You are our source of truth. We love You and honor You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
