Romans 13:1-8

1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.
4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.
7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.

Respect people because they are created by God

  • Show respect even when they don’t deserve it
  • Care about people

1Peter 2:17
Are we guilty of not showing respect? In the grocery store, at work, on facebook?
All authority is established by God –  Romans 13:1
It’s up to us to get our eyes off broken human vessels that occupy positions of authority (any authority in our lives) and instead give respect to the position of authority they hold and the very fact that they were placed in authority by God.
We Pay our Dues:
Taxes, Revenue, Respect, Honor
This comes from loving others.
We owe love and it is evident by how we live.

We are to respect authority that God has placed in our nation

Scripture is the same, regardless of politics and opinion. We are a people who choose to honor governing authority.
Act 13:21-23
King David was placed in authority by God, not perfect though.
Good and bad kings were placed in authority
God has plans beyond our comprehension

How do we walk through all of this if “this is us?”

We remember and practice that…

  • We are a people who trust God
  • We are a people who pay our dues, taxes, bills
  • We are a people who honor our leaders because ALL authority is appointed by God.
  • Whoever loves others has fulfilled the law
  • We are a people who pray for our leaders

God can and will move in the hearts of our leaders and our responsibility is to pray for them!

-Don’t withhold basic respect to those around us
-Submit to authority placed over us
-Walk in love, pray, and trust The Lord
