Throw-Off The Sin That So Easily Entangles

Philippians 3:12-14
Not that I have… already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Even though we can admit we’re not there yet, we really want to embrace all God has for us… We want to cross the finish line & make it to our gate on time.

Hebrews 12:1-2
“…throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Let’s talk about what to do with:
Sin that’s killing us…
Sin that so easily entangles…
Sin that’s keeping us from running our race well.

Ask…“What in me is dead, & rotting, & stinks?”…

In this story we find different responses to death:
(& we give the same responses to our sin & bondage)

  • Let it sleep – Ignore it, it’ll get better
  • Blame someone – “If you would’ve been here…
  • Keep it buriedDecide it’s too late

When sin makes our lives decompose, what do we need to do?

  1. Listen to Jesus’ voice
  2. Stop covering up our sin
  3. Take off rotting, stinking grave-clothes

Do we really see our sin as God does? Something that will kill us/destroy us if we don’t get rid of it?  –Matt 18: if hand, foot or eye causes sin, cut it off!

  • What do we need to cut off?
  • What do we need to throw off?
  • What is it that’s keeping us from running our race?

Whatever stage it’s in, take care of it now!

Throw off the sin that so easily entangles. Let someone help you take off the rotting grave clothes so you won’t get tripped up or slowed down or thrown off course in the race God has called you to run!
